What is a cataract ?

A cataract is a clouding of the natural lens of the eye, which makes your vision blurry. This usually occurs in people in their 60’s and 70’s. It is usually a slow process. You may notice difficulty driving at night, problems seeing the print on television, your computer, or the newspaper, haloes or starbursts around lights, or a feeling like your glasses just don’t work. Sometimes just an adjustment in your glasses will help you see better; sometimes even the best glasses are just not enough, and that’s when we suggest cataract surgery.

Cataracts are very common.

Over 50% of people over 60 have cataracts. All of us, if we get old enough, will develop cataracts.

When would I need surgery for cataract?

It is your decision. You are ready for cataract surgery when you want to see better. You do not have to wait until the cataract is “ripe”.If you are having difficulty reading, driving, watching T.V. or using your computer, then it is time for cataracts surgery. Our doctors use a no-stitch, small incision technique which can remove cataracts as soon as they are interfering with your vision.

You deserve to have cataract surgery performed by our experienced and compassionate eye surgeons here in Bergen County.

Modern cataract surgery is done at our same day surgery center, with no overnight stay.

Most patients do not have to have sutures or a shield over the eye after surgery, and most people enjoy good vision shortly after surgery. In fact, one study shows that 98% of people having cataract surgery have their vison successfully improved after surgery.

Our doctors use the modern no-stitch small incision cataract technique, and implant a permanent intraocular lens, because it is safer, faster, and more comfortable for our patients, and restores your vision.

What is an intraocular lens implant?

An implant is an artificial acrylic or silicone lens selected specifically for your eye to help you see better after cataract surgery. Even if you’ve been very nearsighted or farsighted all your life, the new artifical lens can be selected to make you see better for near or far without glasses. The implants are permanent, and do not wear out or need to be replaced or cleaned. There are many different implants available and many different advantages to each. Our doctors will discuss your options with you in an office visit before surgery.

Will I need glasses after cataract surgery?

Our goal is that for 80% of your life, you will not need glasses; you may still want glasses for driving at night and readers for small print.

Can I see the cataract in my eye (or in my parents’ eye?)

Cataract isn’t a growth over the eye, it is a clouding of the lens inside the eye. You can’t see the cataract with your naked eye.
