LASIK can be used for different visual problems.
LASIK can be used for different visual problems. LASIK is a laser surgical procedure to correct nearsightedness and astigmatism. If you are tired of wearing your glasses for distance, then LASIK might be for you.
Nearsightedness
Nearsightedness or myopia, is when you can see for near without glasses but you can’t see well for distance without glasses or contacts. You may have been nearsighted since elementary school, and noticed it getting worse as you grew up.
Astigmatism
Astigmatism causes blurry vision for distance and for near; it doesn’t usually change so you may have had this all your life.
Needing reading glasses, or presbyopia
Needing reading glasses, or presbyopia is losing your focus for near vision, like reading or the computer screen; this happens around age 40 to people who have perfect vision for distance.
LASIK can be used to correct your distance vision if you have nearsightedness or astigmatism; you can also have “monovision” LASIK, in which Dr. Saunders sets one eye for distance and one eye for near.
How do I know if I am a good candidate for LASIK?
Call (201) 612 0044 to make a free screening appointment with Dr. Saunders at our northern New Jersey office in Ridgwood, and he will tell you if you are the ideal LASIK candidate, or not a good candidate. Some people are not candidates for LASIK at all and Dr. Saunders will be very direct with you. You are not a candidate for LASIK surgery if your cornea is too thin, or your pupil too large, or if you have pre-existing eye conditions like keratoconus or medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis.
How is LASIK done?
LASIK is a laser surgical procedure done here in Bergen County by our New Jersey LASIK surgeon Dr. Saunders. Using topical anesthetic drops, Dr. Saunders numbs the eye completely and then creates a small, clear flap using a precise instrument called a microkeratome. Then, Dr. Saunders exactly positions the eye and the computer programmed laser to resculpt or reshape the cornea. This allows the previously out-of-focus image to become focused. Then, Dr. Saunders gently puts the flap back into place, and puts some eye drops on the eye to promote healing. No stitches are required. The flaps seals into place in about a day. Patients may have blurry vision for a few hours, and then are usually very pleased by the rapid and painless recover of vision without glasses or contacts.
